Why Your Bedford Garden Is Struggling in This Heat: A horticultural guide to keeping your garden alive when temperatures push 30°C!

There's a quiet panic that sets in among gardeners when the temperature forecast turns red. The instinct is to water everything, mow before it gets worse, and do something. In most cases, that instinct makes things worse.


This post is about what's actually happening to your plants in heat like this, what Bedford's particular soil conditions make harder, and — crucially — what you should and shouldn't be doing right now.



What's Actually Happening Inside Your Plants

To understand what extreme heat does to a garden, you need to understand one tiny structure: the stomata.


Stomata are microscopic pores on the undersides of leaves. They're how plants breathe — taking in carbon dioxide for photosynthesis and releasing water vapour as a by-product. In normal conditions, this water release (transpiration) also acts as a cooling mechanism, in the same way that sweating cools the human body. A healthy, well-watered plant can keep its leaf surface temperature several degrees below the surrounding air.


When temperatures soar and soil moisture drops, however, the plant faces an impossible trade-off. Prolonged or intense heat stress typically causes stomata to close to minimise water loss, especially during concurrent drought conditions. But closing the stomata to conserve water means the cooling mechanism shuts down too — and carbon dioxide can no longer enter, so photosynthesis slows or stops entirely.


Beyond those thresholds, the plant's ability to absorb carbon dioxide collapses, photosynthesis slows or stops entirely, and the plant begins burning through its energy reserves faster than it can replenish them.


This is why plants in a heatwave can look distressed even when the soil isn't bone dry. It's not always a water problem — it's a thermal one.

Why Bedford Gardens Are Particularly Vulnerable

Bedford's clay-heavy soils — derived largely from the Jurassic-era Oxford Clay that underlies much of north Bedfordshire — behave in a way that makes extreme heat more damaging than in other parts of the country.


In wet conditions, Oxford Clay holds water tightly, often becoming waterlogged. But during extended dry heat, the same dense particle structure means the surface layer dries and hardens rapidly into something approaching concrete. As it does, it shrinks and cracks — those characteristic deep fissures you'll see opening up across Bedfordshire lawns and borders in July and August.


Those cracks are a problem beyond aesthetics. They allow what little water you do apply to bypass the root zone entirely, draining straight down through the fissures rather than being absorbed gradually into the surrounding soil. You can water a cracked clay garden and have the moisture entirely miss the plants that need it.


The surface crust also dramatically increases heat absorption. Dark, dry clay reflects less sunlight than a moist, vegetated surface, meaning the ground itself is radiating additional heat upward into the very root zone you're trying to protect.



What You Should NOT Do Right Now

Don't mow a brown or dormant lawn

This is probably the most common mistake made during a heatwave. During a drought or heatwave, you should never cut grass that is already under significant stress. Grass plants may not recover from mowing during these periods — if your lawn is looking brown and dormant, it's best to avoid mowing altogether.


A brown lawn is not a dead lawn. It's a dormant one. Grass is remarkably clever — when your lawn runs out of soil water it goes into survival mode, moving water and nutrients being held in the leaves down into the roots, where the underground temperature is cooler and there are no drying winds. Mowing removes the very leaf tissue the plant has been deliberately protecting. You're stripping its insulation at precisely the wrong moment.

If the lawn is still green and growing, raise the mower blade to 5-6cm, cut less often, and mow in the cool of the early morning or evening. Never scalp the lawn, and leave clippings on the surface to act as a moisture-saving mulch.


Don't feed a stressed lawn or drought-affected beds

Do not feed a stressed, dry lawn — high-nitrogen feed forces soft, lush growth that the roots cannot support and can scorch the turf. Hold off on weed-and-feed treatments until autumn. The same applies to your borders. Fertiliser prompts plants to grow — and growth requires water, which isn't available. You're essentially demanding performance from a plant that's already struggling to survive.


Don't water little and often

A light daily sprinkle is worse than not watering at all. It wets only the top centimetre or so of soil, which then evaporates within hours — and crucially, it trains roots to stay shallow, chasing that surface moisture rather than growing downward to where moisture persists. Deep watering less frequently encourages roots to grow down into the soil, where they can access moisture even during dry spells.


Don't water in the middle of the day

Watering between roughly 10am and 4pm in extreme heat results in significant evaporation loss before the water even reaches the roots. It also risks leaf scorch on plants with hairy or waxy surfaces, where droplets can act as a lens in direct sunlight.


Don't assume weeds don't matter right now

Weeds are in direct competition with your garden plants for the limited moisture available in the soil. Groundsel, annual meadow grass, and bindweed in particular are fast-growing and will exploit stressed conditions. Removing them during a heatwave reduces competition — but do it carefully, avoiding disturbance of the surrounding soil and root zones of your desirable plants.



What You Should Do

Water deeply, early, and at the root

The best time to water is early in the morning, between 6 and 10am. Watering during this window ensures minimal evaporation, allowing moisture to penetrate deeply into the soil. Aim to deliver a thorough soak — enough to wet the soil to a depth of at least 15-20cm — rather than a surface sprinkle. On Bedford's clay, this is best done slowly, allowing the water time to penetrate rather than running off the hardened surface.


Mulch anything you can

Mulching is arguably the single highest-impact thing you can do in a heatwave. A 5-8cm layer of organic material — composted bark, garden compost, or even dry grass clippings — over your borders dramatically slows evaporation from the soil surface, moderates the temperature of the root zone, and suppresses weeds simultaneously. On clay soil, it also helps prevent that characteristic surface hardening that causes water to run off rather than soak in.


Keep mulch away from the base of plant stems to avoid encouraging rot, but otherwise apply it as generously as you can.


Leave your lawn alone — it will recover

Dormancy is reversible for healthy turf, and most UK lawns green up within two to three weeks of decent rain. The lawn that looks straw-yellow and crispy in July will, in the vast majority of cases, be lush and green again by September. Bedfordshire lawns have been doing this for a very long time. Resist the urge to intervene.


Move containers into shade

Containerised plants are among the most vulnerable in a heatwave because the pot itself absorbs and radiates heat — terracotta in particular can become extremely hot on its exterior surface, dramatically raising root zone temperatures. Moving containers to a shaded or semi-shaded spot during peak heat hours (roughly 11am to 4pm) can make the difference between a plant that survives and one that doesn't.


Hold off on any hard pruning or transplanting

Any significant pruning creates fresh wounds that the plant must heal, which requires energy and moisture it doesn't have right now. Similarly, transplanting in extreme heat puts a plant into the worst possible conditions just when it needs stability most. Both tasks can wait.



A Note on Timing

Working in a Bedford garden during a heatwave isn't just hard on the plants — it's hard on people too. Red temperature warnings in our area are genuinely rare. When they're issued, the sensible approach is to work in the very early hours of the morning if at all, to stay well hydrated, and to recognise that some gardening tasks simply aren't worth doing in 30°C+ heat.
